New Kindle Ideal for Kids

The new Kindle without a keyboard and no touch screen should be a disaster for Amazon. Who wants to use a device that requires cursoring around an on-screen keyboard using a finger pad and only does one job (a book reader)?

I would tend to agree with this except when I think about my youngest son…

I have a ten year old son who loves to read. He reads at night, in bed, without being prompted. He finishes books in a matter or days. Don’t get me wrong he isn’t without friends or other interests, he spends more time playing on Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 and talking to friends over xbox live. He also plays outside with friends which seems to be a major achievement for a child these days.

A new Kindle would be ideal for him simply because he won’t be distracted by other features. He has an iPod Touch and an Android based phone, both of them are used for playing games 95% of the time. So to have a device that won’t play games and is only used for one thing will allow him to concentrate on reading.

With this in mind it would be ideal for Christmas gift for children that don’t like reading as much. Giving them something that seems ‘gadgety’  might encourage them to read a little more, which is always a good thing.

Downloading of Titles

Because the device automatically downloads titles as and when they’re purchased in the Kindle store, I can purchase new books for him while I’m working on my PC and he will see them appear in his hand-held-library.

Three 3′s for Christmas   no comments

Posted at 10:55 am in Consoles and Games

November brings the release of three video games which are all number 3 in their series (well almost). Any of them would make an ideal Christmas pressy for someone that loves kicking serious virtual ass.

cod mw31 Three 3s for ChristmasCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

This is actually the eight Call of Duty title, but only the third to hold the Modern Warfare sub-title. You continue to follow the characters from Modern Warfare 2, Soap MacTavish and John Price who – with the help of Nikolai the Russian informant – attempt to halt the Russians as they begin World War 3.

You continue to pursue Makarov from the previous Modern Warfare episode and, hopefully this time, end him.

This was the biggest game release of all time, selling $775 million in the first five days.

Assassins Creed Revelations

Assassins Creed Revelations Cover 220x300 Three 3s for ChristmasThis latest adventure in the Renaissance period of history sees the same characters from the previous episodes. This time Ezio and Altair are in Constantinople all be it at different times,  and Desmond is in a comma trying to puzzle his way out of unconsciousness.

The fighting is as intricate and bloody as usual and the scenery from the root tops is exceptional.

The new hookblade allows Ezio to reach further and also use cables as zip lines between buildings.

All in all it’s a steady improvement from the previous instalment and continues the story well.

Saints Row the Third

Saints Row The Third box art 238x300 Three 3s for ChristmasAs in Saints Row 2, you play the leader of the Third Street Saints this time in the city of Steelport. You wage a turf war with the rival criminal group ‘The Syndicate’ after they caused you to do time and then tried to squeeze a ton of money from the gang.

Everything in this game is over the top. The game a bigger and better than the previous Saints Row instalments, and actively pokes fun at itself and other aspects of popular culture.

If you’ve never played a GTA or Saints Row type game give this one a try. You’ll find yourself chuckling as you batter innocent bystanders.

Upgrading PC Memory – Using Crucial Memory Scanner   no comments

Posted at 9:08 pm in Computers

486sx Upgrading PC Memory Using Crucial Memory ScannerI remember buying my first PC or IBM compatible 486 SX 25 with 1MB of RAM. It ran well but needed some more memory to be able to run Doom a bit better. The choice for memory upgrades back them was very limited. I ended up buy a 4MB memory module for £265 and the supplier wouldn’t guarantee it would work in my system. Luckily it did and Doom ran really well. I even had enough memory to be able to upgrade to Windows 95.

Thankfully, these days, upgrading your computer’s system memory has never been so easy, especially with web sites like Crucial. Crucial not only have a range of memory for 1000′s of different PC make and models, they offer an on-line scanning tool which tells you how much memory your system currently has and what your upgrade options are. They also guarantee the memory will work in your system or your money back.

System Scanner

Their system scanner currently only supports Windows based PCs so if you have an Apple or Linux based PC you’ll have to use the manual selection boxes to pick your exact model. If you do have Windows give the memory scanner a try and see if you can speed up your PC at a very reasonable price.

Prices for current memory types are around £10 per GB at the moment. But prices for faster and older memory are higher.

With free delivery why not scan your memory here.
